February 2019 Power Stroke

Recreation Member Survey Results

SCC had a total of 1642 members in 2018, with an increase of 88 members from last year. Due to this large number the feedback from you was very important to improve our services, logistics, and programming. We received 202 responses to the survey that we sent out last fall - thank you!  Three participants were chosen at random to receive free memberships for 2019 and those people have been notified. There were many good critics and ideas suggested, on which the executives have started working on this winter. We will continue offering a series of mini training courses, try to organize more group paddle events.

Club Trip Fee Eliminated

One of the recurring comments that we received on the survey was that the $5/person/day boat use fee for club trips did not seem necessary.  We agree with you. That fee has now been eliminated. All the other policies for organizing and participating in club trips remain in place.

We’re Hiring

Another decision we made based on volunteer feedback and survey results is to hire some help to aid us in the day-to-day running of the club during the summer. The new employee(s) will allow us to respond to damaged equipment faster, provide times when someone will be at the boathouse to help with carrying boats, answering basic questions and running tours. Members will still have 24/7 access to the boathouse.  The full job posting is at bit.ly/SCC-job

Special event next year: Paddling Film Festival 13th Nov 2019

The Paddling Film Festival's first stop in Saskatoon!

The Paddling Film Festival is an international adventure film tour presenting the world's best paddling films of the year- whitewater, sea kayaking, canoeing, SUP, action and lifestyle- in more than 120 cities and towns across Canada, United States and around the world.

The audience will see hairy whitewater action, sea kayakers exploring remote coastlines, northern river canoe expeditions, international river travel films, motivating environmental documentaries, gruelling kayak fishing battles and hilarious short films capturing the lighter side of paddling life.

We look forward to an inspiring, fun and social evening, with like minded outdoor enthusiasts.

Event Attendees will receive a free 1 year digital subscription to Paddling Magazine and/or Kayak Angler.

All proceeds will be donated to Outdoor School Saskatoon.

Selection of movies will take time and therefor tickets will go on sale later in the summer.

AGM Dates Set

We will be holding our Annual General Meeting at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday April 9th at J.S. Wood Library and you are encouraged to attend.  In addition to presenting reports on the 2018 season and our plans for 2019, we will elect the executive to serve for the next year.  You must obtain a 2019 membership prior to the meeting in order to vote. While all positions are open for nomination, we are in particular need of candidates for the position of membership director. For more info contact president@saskatooncanoeclub.org

Our provincial sport governing body, Canoe Kayak Saskatchewan (CKS), will be holding its AGM on Saturday March 23rd in Saskatoon.  Part of every SCC membership fee is a CKS membership (Rec. Div.: $15, Marathon Div. or both divisions: $20).  Collectively, this represents a substantial financial contribution from our club to CKS, so it is important for CKS to hear your views on how it should use your money.  The best way to do this is to attend the CKS AGM.  The SCC makes up about three quarters of CKS’ total members, so we have the power to change CKS for the better, but this is unlikely to happen unless enough of us vote at their meetings.
