The following message was emailed to members that opted into the newsletter Sept 16, 2020

The long summer days may have passed, but there is still time to enjoy the river from a canoe or kayak before ski season arrives!

In this newsletter:

  1. New group paddle times
  2. Boathouse staff hours this fall
  3. Fred Heal day trip Sept. 19th
  4. Lost and found items
  5. Trip Tales has moved online

Group paddle times have changed

Due to the earlier sunsets and cooler mornings this time of year, we have made some changes to the group paddle schedule for the remainder of the season.  Recreation Division group paddles are now at 6:00 p.m. Thursdays and 11:00 a.m. Sundays, while Marathon Division group paddles are now at 6:00 p.m. Wednesdays and 1:00 p.m Sundays.

Boathouse staff hours this fall

The Recreation Division paddling season typically runs for the duration of the ice-free period on the river.  This year, with the need to have staff present, we have decided to remain open until at least the end of September (weather permitting, of course).  It’s always a good idea to check the staff schedule before coming to the boathouse.

Fred Heal day trip - 8:00 a.m. Sept. 19th

There are still some spaces available on this final SCC club trip of the season.  It’s a great opportunity to see plenty of migratory birds and enjoy the fall colours!  The group will meet at the boathouse to load equipment, drive the short distance to the Fred Heal canoe launch south of the city, and then paddle back to the boathouse.  More information and the sign-up form is available on the SCC trips page.

Lost and found items

A photo of some unclaimed items found in or around the boathouse is here.  If any of these belong to you, stop by the boathouse during staff hours to claim them or send an email to staff@saskatooncanoeclub.org

Trip Tales has moved online this year

Due to COVID-19, this year we have decided to forego the regular Trip Tales potluck in October. Instead, we would like you to share your paddling adventure stories with us and others online.  The plan is to post stories once a week starting around Oct. 15th and continue as long we have more stories to share.

We are looking for stories about whatever memorable moments you have from your trips this summer: a beautiful sunset, a whitewater wipeout, a horrendous portage, a new camp recipe, an interesting wildlife encounter, etc.  They can be about some special sightings, events or races, or a diary of your whole trip; the format can be as simple as a single photo with a caption or a more extensive slideshow or video.

Here are the guidelines:

  • As usual try to keep your story crisp and rather short than long (max. 15 minutes).
  • We plan to post the link to the stories on our website and Facebook.
  • Ideally the story should be in a photo, pdf, or video format, but other formats are welcome too (PowerPoint, Word, etc.).  If you need a hand converting the format, let us know.
  • Inclusion of your name and contact data is totally voluntary while sharing the story. You can also decide how long you would like to have your story public (minimum is one week).

Send your story to Tiina, the SCC Social Director at social@saskatooncanoeclub.org.
